Henry Sy is a Chinese-Filipino business magnate, investor, and philanthropist who started pennilessly but worked his way up to the success of multi-billion dollar business empire in the Philippines. In 2015, Forbes magazine listed him as the wealthiest man in the Philippines, on top of 11 other billionaires in the country including John Gokongwei and Lucio Tan.
On January 19, Saturday, Sy passed away in a peaceful sleep at the age of 94. According to Rappler, Sy is scheduled for his regular laboratory tests at the Makati Medical Center on Saturday morning. The Sm group said in a statement to Agence France-Presse:
"Henry Sy... passed away peacefully in his sleep early Saturday morning. There are no further details at the moment."
Due to his old age, Sy had to do visitation on some of his malls in a wheelchair and took vacations in his home in Tagaytay Highlands. The running of his business every day was turned over to his children in recent years but still remained chairman emeritus of SM Investments.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Sy had a net worth of 7.2 billion as of Friday, January 18 while Forbes released a statement of his net worth of $19 billion as of Saturday. The SM group is the largest and dominant conglomerate in the Philippines.
In 2006, he told STAR:
"Our store was so small it had no back or second floor, we just slept on the counter late at night after the store was closed."
During World War II, Sy's family stores burned down and his father went back to China. But Sy was determined and resorted to other business ventures. He started with a shoe business in 1958 that eventually turned into Show Mart and later, Sm Department Store.
